Scenes From a Race

Our own unofficial kids' race

Finn celebrates cracking 17 for 5K

Our not so young hero brings home 6th place

By the way, Kiera took all the pics. She always does, but I often forget to give her credit. She seldom forgets to remind me.

The results tell the tale. 6th place, 35:23, 6th place overall. I stayed in contact as best I could on the winding uphill, and I did manage to close in on 4th and 5th, but in the end I just held my place from about mile 3. This was a fun and difficult race on undulating terrain and through six water crossings. The fact that I was able to run the same pace as I did for a flat 10K in January is encouraging, but those guys in front of me just seem to be getting stronger and stronger.

Training: 3/9 pm., 10 miles w/6.4 mile race
3/4, 16.5 miles, 1h58m, 7:14 with a bunch of hills
Miles for the week: 86 in 9 sessions, not bad

Mike, someone needs to mention that you would have won last year's race by over a minute. Since you are too modest to do that ... here it is. Great effort!

HI 'NOT SO YOUNG RUNNER'
I MAYBE READING BETWEEN THE LINES BUT I THINK YOUR FAR TO0 YOUNG TO BE WORRYING ABOUT YOUR AGE AND POSSIBLE DECREASING PERFORMANCES.
I TURNED 47 YESTERDAY AND SINCE FOLLOWING ARTHUR LYDIARDS TRAINING 6 MONTHS AGO I HAVE REALLY TURNED BACK THE CLOCK AS FAR AS MY RACE PERFORMANCES GO!I STARTED RUNNING AT AGE 33 AFTER 10 YEARS CYCLE RACING. AT 42-43 I REACHED MY PEAK, BUT NOW WITH THE HELP OF MR LYDIARD I AM CLOSING IN ON MY BEST TIMES AGAIN. I AM NOW RUNNING TO A LEVEL I THOUGHT WAS LONG PAST ME BECAUSE OF AGING!
I RECKON YOU HAVE A GOOD FEW YEARS OF IMPROVEMENT IN YOU AS LONG AS YOU BELIEVE AGE IS NOT A PROBLEM.

I like the uniform Mike. Kiera did a nice job of catching it with a nice blend of shadow and light to really bring out the essence of the fabric.

Like anonymous (you?) mentioned at 4:51am, you would have done some damage to last year's field. I only wonder if you might have also dominated the 2008 section of the race if you had properly worn a camelback or hydration belt for such a long race.

You caught me Blax, I'm anonymous.

ALIEN, I'M NOT REALLY WORRIED ABOUT MY AGE, IT'S JUST THAT THE OLD SAW TRADITIONALLY STARTS OUT WITH "OUR YOUNG HERO" IS ALL.

Oh, and Blax, let me know if you find a fuel belt that would match the fly new singlet. I already have matching gaiters at the ready for the next trail race. By the way, are you running or golfing these days?

At the very least you wore a great looking singlet. Very funky!

I've been dabbling in both.

I took up a New Years resolution to start jogging but I didn't begin until February because I read that most people are no longer following their resolutions on March 1. I actually found a Lydiard book when I was hanging out in the library a few weeks ago so I rented it and read through most of it. Interesting stuff. So I'm just jogging for time right now.

And since you know golf is really expensive right now, I've been playing some executive courses (if you could even call a 135 yard, par 4 "golf"). I'll be getting out more once La Paloma drops to like $35 for a 2pm tee time at 114+ degree weather. The invites always open for you to come though.

Nice photo Kiera! I like the sun on the hills in the background, and how Mike's blurred feet show his speed.

I believe our not so young hero has many years left in which to run all-time PBs.

Really nice race Mike. Unfortunately, on any given day, you might find someone faster out there on the course. For you, it's 5 or 6 guys; for the rest of us, it's 5 or 6 hundred.

Nice job in the race! Especially with water and all!!

"but those guys in front of me just seem to be getting stronger and stronger." I wonder what the guys just behind you are saying about you... I have no doubt it is the same thing!

Congrats - and great job to Finn! Sub 17! :)

That is right - I kept staring and couldn't figure it out - new racing uniform! ;) Looks nice

I like the first post -- you would have won by over a minute for last year's... again... include yourself in the pack of guys getting strong and stronger (and faster and faster)!
